Can we wear insoles manufactured from pig skin?

Leather hide

We have just found out that there is an issue of pig skin leather being used in shoes or other types of clothing etc.  From what we have seen all of the shoes that we have contain the three dots in the soles.

Is this permissible to wear?

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The pig has been declared as najis al-‘ayn (inherently impure).  The gross impurity of the pig stands before and after death.  Let alone the flesh, even the bloodless parts of a pig are impure like the hair.  In contrast, the hair and other bloodless body parts of all other animals are pure.

Tanning and chemically treating animal hides purifies the skin of all animals except the pig.  Even if the blood is washed out from the hide of a pig, then too it will remain inherently impure.  Pig skin simply cannot be purified in any way.[1]

Therefore, it is not permissible to wear shoes lined with pig skin insoles and other types of clothing manufactured from pig hide.[2]

  1. Masha’Allah, great job u guys r doing. Concerning the same issue, I know of a shoe dealer here in Zambia who is Masha’Allah, deeni-inclined and he makes sure he never orders any footwear which has pigskin in them. Whenever he goes to conferences to buy footwear he always asks first whether it contains pigskin or not. He has also influenced other Muslim suppliers who he has met in those conferences who never used to take caution in this matter but now they do. His suppliers have also come to know about this particular issue and they appreciate these sentiments. Masha’Allah, may Allah grant him barakah. Ameen!
