Knowledge: Seek, process, register and implement

    • Knowledge of that which affects a person under all conditions holds a position similar to food, which obviously one can live without.  Knowledge of matters affecting a person only in certain occasions holds a position equivalent to medicine; it is only needed at stipulated times.  And knowledge of forbidden things is like a disease; it is harmful and brings no benefit.

  • Imam Abu Hanifah rahimahullah said, “The purpose of learning is to act by it, while the purpose of action is to abandon the fleeting life for what lasts forever.”
  • The treasure of good bounties lies on the peaks of calamities.  Knowledge is only gained by climbing such peaks.
  • Take night as a camel, you will reach your destination.  Use the nights wisely when in search of knowledge.
  • Your mind is your riding beast, so use it with  moderation.  Do not burn yourself out.  Have moderate breaks and refreshments when whilst studying.
  • Man flies with zeal and fervour like a bird flies with wings.
  • Imam Zahir ad-Din said, “The ignorant are dead before death, while the learned live even after death.”
  • “When one’s respect for knowledge after hearing it a 1,000 times isn’t equal to 1st time, he isn’t worthy of knowledge.”
  • Ibn Mas’ud Radiallahu anhu used to say, “I swear by Allah, whom there is no other deity, no chapter of the Quran was revealed except that I know where it was revealed.  No verse from the Quran has been revealed except that I know why it was revealed.  Yet if I knew anyone more learned than me in the Book of Allah, I would make every effort to reach him.”
  • Abu Darda Radiallahu anhu used to say, “If I were unable to explain a verse in the book of Allah and could not find anyone to explain it to me except a man in Bark al-Ghimaad, I would journey to him.” Bark al Ghimaad is the farthest corner ofYemen.
  •  If anyone was directed to a man in a distant land, he would be told, “That land is near for anyone concerned about his religion.”
  • When Muadh ibn Jabal Radiallahu anhu was in the last moments of his life, he cried saying, “I weep at how I will miss feeling thirst from the midday heat (from fasting), standing in prayer during the long winter nights and the crowds of students kneeling around the scholars in the circles of knowledge.”
  • Imam Ahmed relates from Anas Radiallahu anhu that the Prophet Salallahu alayhi wasallam said, “The similitude of the religious scholars on earth is that of the stars in the sky, by which people are guided through the darkness of the land and sea.  If the stars are extinguished, even the guides might stray.”        The religious scholars have been likened to the stars, which provide three benefits:  they guide the people through darkness; they adorn the sky; and they are missiles that repel shayateen who ascend the heavens.  The religious scholars possess three characteristics:  they guide through darkness; they adorn the earth; and they are missiles that repel shaytaan, who mix the truth with falsehood.
  • Hasan al Basri says, “knowledge is of two types: knowledge of the tongue, which is proof of Allah against the son of Adam, and knowledge of the heart, which is beneficial knowledge.”  When inner knowledge departs, outer knowledge remains on people’s tongues as proof against them.
  • Inner knowledge is that which touches the heart and instils fear, humility and awareness of Allah’s sublimity, love and yearning.  Outer knowledge is that which remains on the tongue having no effect on the heart.
  • Imam Ahmed said, “Religious knowledge is not an abundance of memorised texts.  Rather, knowledge is humility.”
  • Abdullah ibn Mubarak said, “Fear of Allah is sufficient knowledge, and being deceived concerning Allah is sufficient ignorance.”
  • Once Allahmah Ibn Sireen entered a mosque inBasra, and saw two gatherings, in one gathering, the stories of the pious were being related and in the other gathering, a jurist was lecturing.  He made dua to Allah Ta’ala as to which gathering he should join.  He fell asleep.  He had a vision in which he heard someone saying to him, “Do you think the two gatherings to be equal? If you wish I will show you that the seat of Jibraeel is in the circle of the jurist.”
