By the grace of Allah, Durban and in particular the Darul Iftaa was blessed on the 28th of June 2012 with the personality of Shaykh Muhammad Awwamah Hafizahullah.

A bright star in the galaxy of Ulama, a prized asset of the Ummah, a lion in the defence of the sunnah, an inspiration for the students, Shaykh Muhammad Awwamah has spent over half a century serving Islam and in particular the science of Hadith.

Shaykh hails from the cradle of Ulama; the historic city of Halab (Aleppo) in Syria.  He was born around 1940.  Shaykh was born in an era which was enlightened with many senior and high ranking Ulama.  Shaykh attended the lectures of the luminary Shaykh Abdullah Sirāj al-Dīn rahimahullah.  Likewise, Shaykh Muhammad Awwamah studied under the world renowned scholar, Shaykh Abd al-Fattāh Abū Ghuddah rahimahullah.

Shaykh Abd al-Fattah said regarding Shaykh Awwamah,

“my student of yesterday and companion of today.”

Shaykh Abd al-Fattah said on another occasion in respect of Shaykh Awwamah,

“A genius and a muhaqqiq (researcher).”

Another scholar said about him,

“That he does not know any person on the face of the earth similar to Shaykh Awwamah when it comes to researching (tahqīq).”

It is common about Shaykh Awwmah hafizahullah that when he hears good taking place in the world, he brightens up.  When he hears bad news, his state changes for the worse.

Once upon receiving bad news, the honourable Shaykh could not get up from his bed for 3 days.

Shaykh’s devotion to Hadith is reflected in the fact that he never bought a newspaper in his entire life.  Only once he purchased a newspaper for a specific reason.

Shaykh has great respect and love for the Ulama of the Indian sub continent.  He had close affiliation with Hadhrat Shaykh Maulana Muhammad Zakariyya, Maulana Habīb al-Rahmān al-‘Azami and Maulana Saeed Ahmed Khan Rahimahumulluh.

Shaykh attended this programme accompanied with his son Dr.Muhyi al-Din.  Shaykh Doctor Muhyi al-Din first spoke on how the traditional method of teaching and its blessings have all but disappeared.  Today it is all about certificates and papers.  In those days, it was all about excelling in ranks in the Hereafter.

After the programme in Musjid as-Saliheen, The Darul Iftaa was honoured with the presence of this great personality.  Shaykh Muhammad Awwamah advised the students not to rush in answering questions.  He further highlighted the need to analyse and know the questioner before providing an answer.  He cited many examples of the Sahabah and Tabi’een who gave different answers to same question due to the difference in one questioner from the other.
