Question:

What is the ruling of Salah performed where there is a picture?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Ideally, one should allocate a place for ṣalāh which is free from anything which will distract a person or bring dislike into the ṣalāh.  Nevertheless, if a person performed ṣalāh in a place where there was an animate picture, the consequence is dependent on the size of the picture.  Inanimate images such as trees, houses, cars and the like thereof do not have a direct consequence upon the ṣalāh, however, one should abstain from performing ṣalāḥ in front of such images as they may distract a person.

There are two types of animate pictures:

1)    Small
2)    Big

A small picture is that which if placed on the ground, a standing person of reasonable vision will be unable to ascertain the features of the picture.  This is similar to the pictures printed on most coins.

A big picture is that which if placed on the ground, a standing person of reasonable vision is able to ascertain the features of the picture without difficulty.

There is no dislike in performing ṣalāh in the presence of a small picture.

However, if ṣalāh is performed in the presence of a big picture, the magnitude of dislike will vary according to the location of the picture.  The level of dislike is relatively higher if the picture is in front of oneself as oppose to other locations.  Thereafter, the dislike will decrease if the picture being above, followed by being on the right side, thereafter on the left side and lastly, behind a person.  [1]
