Question:

Assalamu Alaykum, Can a man wear a platinum ring? Jazakumullah Khayr

The Fatwa

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

The Answer

Men cannot wear platinum rings.

The Fiqh of the Answer

Classically, rings served one of two objectives:

  1. Jewellery;
  2. stamping tools for identification and sealing correspondence. For this reason, they were termed ‘Khātam’, which also means seal.

Jewellery is worn for beautification (Zīnah). A ring by default is a form of jewellery. However, when used for a reason other than jewellery, such as a seal, it is not deemed jewellery in that particular use case as it is not for Zīnah as stated by Imam al-Bābirtī (d.786 AH). Zīnah (beautification) is prohibited for men as discussed by Shaykhī Zādah (d.1078 AH), and also by Imam al-Bābirtī (d.786 AH).

Imam Ibn Māzah al-Bukhārī (d.616 AH) mentions that men may need to wear rings for genuine reasons such as stamping and sealing. This need is fulfilled by using silver rings. In reality, this is Khilāf al-Qiyās, as the logic of the law is that rings are jewellery by default and wearing rings by men is not permitted. Therefore, the permission of silver is known by Naṣṣ, and as a form of Istiḥsān. When it is Istiḥsān, the permission will remain to what was narrated in the Naṣṣ according to the established principle narrated by Mullā Khusrū (d.885 AH), Ibn Nujaym (d.970 AH) and others.Consequently, anything other than silver, like gold, platinum or rhodium remain on the default of prohibition. The default for such accessories which are jewellery and a form of Zīnah are prohibited for men.

Qāḍī Khān (d.592 AH) and several others, including Imam Ibn Māzah al-Bukhārī (d.616 AH), who references Imam Muhammad al-Shaybānī (d.189 AH), assert that men can only wear silver rings (to fulfil the need). This view is further iterated by contemporary scholars like Allāmah Gangohi, Mufti Raḍa ul Haq, who deem wearing rings of materials other than silver as Makrūh (disliked).
