Question:
Salam. Would we pray tahiyyatul masjid only if we entered the actual building of the Masjid Nabawi? Or would we pray if we entered the the ground walls – like the bit that’s still outdoors? /courtyards?

The Answer
The Fiqh of the Answer
Imam Zayn al-Dīn Ibn Nujaym (d.970 AH) states that Taḥiyyat al-Masjid is not specifically denoted for the Masjid but is rather a prayer for Almighty Allah. Therefore, an individual can pray this prayer even if they are not in the Masjid. This line of reasoning is further corroborated by Imām Ṭaḥṭāwī (d.1231 AH), Imām Ibn ʿĀbidīn (d.1252 AH), Imām Tumurtāshī (d. 1004 AH), Mullā Ḥusayn al-Rūmī (d. 1084 AH), Imām al-Ḥaskafī (d. 1004 AH), and Muftī Riḍā’ al-Ḥaqq (may Allah preserve him).
Imām al-Zayla‘ī (d. 743 AH), however, notes that Taḥiyyat al-Masjid is specific to the Masjid. Mūllā Khusrūw further corroborates this reasoning by stating that the Prophet ﷺ commanded, “When one of you enters the mosque, let him not sit until he has performed two Rakʿāt.” Therefore, Taḥiyyat al-Masjid can only be performed in the Masjid and not outside the designated area of the Masjid. Imam ash-Shurunbulālī (d.1069 AH) further states that if the individual performs their obligatory prayer, such as the Fajr prayer, with the intention of Taḥiyyat al-Masjid, then their intention will be valid. This reasoning is further corroborated by Imām Al-Kāshgari (d.879 AH). Furthermore, Imām Zayn ad-Dīn Ibn Nujaym and Imām al-Ḥaskafī do not allow individuals in a state of ritual impurity to enter the Masjid building, but they do allow them to enter the Masjid complex. This indicates a clear distinction between the Masjid building and surrounding areas. Imām al-Busāṭī (d.1304 AH) also references a transmission from Faqīh Abū al-Layth as-Samarqandī (d.373 AH), who states that it is part of the etiquette of the Masjid for an individual to perform two Rākʿat upon entering.
The Aṣl al-Binā’ of this Mas’alah revolves around what the Taḥiyyah is for? If the Taḥiyyah is for Almighty Allah, then it ought not to restricted to the Masjid literally. However, if it is for the Masjid primarily, and part of the etiquettes of this sacred place, then this form of Taḥiyyah is something that is only known through Prophetic practice and teachings. As such, it would be restricted to what has been learnt from the Prophet ﷺ.
