Question:

Mufti Sahib, is Ammaarah a Sahaabiyyahs name? I’ve checked and can only find the name ‘Umarah, and not Ammaarah. [Question Posted as Received]

The Fatwa

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

The Answer

Ammarah (عَمّارة) is the name of some female Hadith narrators, however, we could not locate such a name given to a female companion of the beloved Messenger (Peace and Blessings be upon Him).

The Fiqh of the Answer

Ibn al-Athīr d. 630A.H.) relates two female narrators in his compendia on Hadith texts that have the name ‘Ammarah (عَمّارة). Ibn al-Athīr[i] further notes one narration from Imam al-Wāqidī (d. 207 A.H.) which says that the daughter of Hamza bin Abdul Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) was named Ammarah (عَمّارة)[ii], However, Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī (d. 463 A.H.) disputes this as a mistake from Imam al-Wāqidī and says the daughter’s name was Umamah (أمامة) And Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) had a son named Ammarah.[iii]

Rationale:

The Prophet ﷺ encouraged Muslims to give themselves good, meaningful names. He is reported to have said, ‘On the Day of Resurrection, you will be called by your names and by your father’s names, so give yourselves good names.’ This hadith encourages Muslims to take meaningful names. The Arabic meaning of the name Ammarah is: “A lady who is steadfast and powerful in her faith” or “A woman who observes almighty Allah’s commands with the utmost punctuality.” As a result, it is a fitting name.[iv]
