The Answer
Wuḍū’ will be invalidated by vomiting a mouthful or more. Mouthful is described as that quantity which cannot be withheld without undue difficulty.
The Fiqh of the Answer
According to Imam al-Marghīnānī (d.593 AH), only Imam Zufar (d. 158 AH) differed and held the view that any amount of vomit invalidates Wuḍū’. This is because according to him, there is no consideration of less or more, just that the presence of impurity negates the state of purity. However, according to the rest of the Ḥanafī jurists, the invalidating vomit of Wuḍū’ is that which is a mouthful.
The binā’ of this Mas’alah is that the Maʿnā for invalidating Wuḍū’ is Khurūj al-Najāsah. Imam al-Kāsānī (d.587 AH) states that Najāsah is in the stomach. Vomit that comes from the stomach bursts forth with full force from the stomach ejects, filling the entire mouth. It is with such vomit that Wuḍū’ is broken as the vomit now is mixed with impurities that were residing in the stomach. The Fuqahā’ had identified that from the stomach downwards, the body’s digestive system and waste disposal system begins. Mullā Khusrū (d.885 AH) clarifies that vomit less than a mouthful does not invalidate Wuḍū’. Such vomit is not of full force and is typically from above the stomach. As such, it is not mixed with impurities generally.
