Question:

Does a Madrasa teacher who is listening to different students have to do multiple Sajda Tilawa? [Question Published as Received.]

The Fatwa

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

The Answer

Multiple Sujūd of Tilāwah will become Wājib upon the recitation of each individual student. However, if one student recites a single Āyah of Sajdah multiple times, only one Sajdah will be Wājib.

The Fiqh of the Answer

‘Allāmah Ibn ‘Abidīn al-Shāmī (d.1252 AH) Rahimahullāḥ states that the multiple Sujúd (pl. of Sajdah) of Tilāwah become necessary due to one of three reasons:-

  • Recitation of different Āyāt of Sajdah- irrespective of the reader (one or more).
  • The recitation of the same Āyāh of Sajdah is heard (or recited) by multiple people, then each person is required to perform Sajdah.
  • The changing of the place of either the reciter or the listener. The one who changes his/her place shall be obliged to perform multiple Sujúd, regardless of the Āyah being recited is the same or not.

The multiple Wujūb of Sajdah Tilāwah are combined and executed through one singular Sajdah only when the Āyah of Sajdah being recited is one, by the same person and is recited in a single Majlis. Imam al-Ṭahṭāwī (d.1231 AH) further explains: “If one was to recite the entire Qurān in one sitting, all the different Āyāt of Sajdah will necessitate multiple prostrations”. Therefore, it is understood that the recitations of multiple students will result in the Wujūb of numerous Sujúd.
