Question:

If there is a gap in front of me during Salah, do I move forward whilst I am in Salah? Am I allowed to walk? [Question published as received.]

The Fatwa

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

The Answer

The gap in the Ṣaff ahead should be filled by the praying person taking up to two moderate steps. If one is required to take more than two steps, he will advance forward with a pause between each step. If one takes steps continuously without pause, their Ṣalāh will be rendered Fāsid due to ‘Amal Kathīr – excessive repeated movement.

The Fiqh of the Answer

Ibn Māzah al-Bukhāri (d.616 AH) states that the praying person should take slight and small steps towards the Ṣaff wherein there is space and not take steps consecutively beyond one Ṣaff as this will amount to excessive movement and negligence in Ṣalāh.

It must be noted that although one is permitted to take steps ahead to fill the vacant space in the Ṣaff ahead, the chest must at all times be facing the direction of the Qiblah. Should one turn their chest away, the Ṣalāh will become void as discussed in Munyatul Muṣallī.
