Question:

Assalaamu Alaikum
I hope you could provide me with an answer as this is rather urgent. Please forgive the urgency.
Q1: If a lady suffers extreme pain in her knees and therefore cannot go into the sajdah position but she’s able to walk around and complete her household chores, should she sit for the duration of her Fardh and waajib salaah or is it waajib for her to stand?
Q2: If one has the ability to stand will the fardh and waajib salaah be valid if it is executed in the sitting position (on a chair/bed)?
Q3: Should salaah that was invalid be performed again?
Jazakallah

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

A person who is able to stand (make Qiyām) but cannot make Sajdah has the following options:

1) She may perform the entire Salāh including the gestures for Rukū’ and Sajdah standing up

2) She may perform the Qiyām and Rukū’ standing up and then sit down to perform the gesture for Sajdah

3) She may perform the entire Salāh including the gestures for Rukū’ and Sajdah sitting down.

From the three options mentioned above, the Jurists have stated that the last option (to perform the entire Salāh in a sitting posture and gesture) is best.[1]

And Allah Ta’ālā Knows Best
