Question:

Nowadays when a child is an infant, it’s become quite common for people to do something that’s known as ‘Baby casting’. I wanted to know what is the ruling with regards to it. Is it جائز or not?

The Fatwa

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

The Answer

Baby casting of a hand or feet is permissible.

The Fiqh of the Answer

Baby casting refers to the process of creating moulds or impressions of a baby’s hands and feet. It’s a popular way for parents to capture and preserve a tangible keepsake of their baby’s early days. Typically, baby casting involves using a safe, non-toxic moulding material, such as alginate or silicone, to make a detailed impression of a baby’s hands and feet.

Taṣwīr (making images or sculptures) is prohibited. According to Imām Ibn ʿĀbidīn (d.1252 AH), the rationale behind this prohibition is that it involves an attempt to resemble, challenge and position oneself as counterpart to Allah in creating and creation of things.

Imam ʿAbd al-Ḥaqq al-Dihlawī (d.1052 AH) states that prohibition and warnings against Taṣwīr refer to a person who makes statues to be worshipped besides Allah. Another view is that that anyone who makes sculptures with the intention to vie and contest with Allah and resemble Allah in the ability to create.

The Fuqahā’  have defined the criteria for what constitutes a Ṣūrah (image or portrait). Imām al-Kāsānī (d.587 AH) mentions that anything that does not have a head does not fall under the definition of Ṣūrah. Imām al-Bābartī (d.786 AH) and Imām al-‘Aynī (d.855 AH) both mention in their explanations of al-Hidāyah that those sculptures which do not have a head become sculptures of inanimate objects and therefore do not assume the same rulings as sculptures of animate beings.

According to Imām Ibn Māzah al-Bukhāri (d.616 AH), the exception for sculptures without a head arises from the understanding that objects lacking a head are not objects of worship. Similarly, the prohibition of images is primarily related to the reverence they may elicit, potentially leading to idolatry. Consequently, inanimate objects and small pictures that do not invoke veneration are not subject to the prohibition. As baby casting does not meet the criteria of being a Ṣūrah, it would not be considered a violation of this prohibition.

Unlike the prohibitions related to sculpture-making, the essence of baby casting does not involve an attempt to imitate or challenge the divine act of creation.
