Question:

Is it permissible to change one’s surname after marriage?

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

 The Answer:

It is permissible to change one’s surname to that of the husband’s after marriage. This is a cultural practice and the name changing symbolises one has wed into a new family. This does not go against any Qur’anic injunction on naming.
