Question:

Is it permissible to wear a watch with a bezel and hands made of gold for men?

Question published as received.

The Fatwa

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

The Answer

A watch with a gold bezel and gold hands will be severely disliked (Makrūh) to wear.

The Fiqh of the Answer

According to the teachings of Imam Abū Hanīfah, as expounded upon by Ibn Māzah Al Bukhārī (d.616 AH), there exist two key principles in determining the usage of an item containing gold:

  • If the usage of an item necessitates the contact of gold particle(s) with the skin, the item is considered impermissible to use.
  • The gold in its miniature quantity must not be a principal, solitary component, such that in its absence, the item would be rendered unusable.

Should the first criteria be met, but not the second – as is in the questioner’s scenario – the usage of such an item would be deemed Makrūh Tahrīmī.

Though some leeway may be found in the bezel of the watch, as not to be considered a key component, the gold dials undoubtedly are integral, beneficial components. A watch without its dials, would be rendered ineffective. Thus, wearing a watch with gold dials would be highly reprehensible to wear.
