Question:
Many people have some of their toes up during sajda. I have heard this is not right? Please tell me what is right?
Answer:
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
In principle, it is wājib (necessary) to have the feet touching the ground in the state of sajdah (prostration).[1]
One’s sajdah will be correct and the salāh will be valid if one toe (any of the ten on one’s foot) touched the ground for the duration of saying Subhāna Rabbī al-a᾿lā once[2].
However, it is disliked and improper to perform sajdah in a careless manner where some toes are lifted and others are not.[3]
If a person did not place his toes at all on the ground, then it is necessary for him to repeat that salāh as he has missed out a wājib element of salāh.
By placing toes on the ground here refers to the toes merely touching the ground, whether the toes are facing the Qiblah or not. Though, it is an emphasised sunnah to have the toes facing the Qiblah. Failure to have the toes directed towards to the Qiblah is disliked.[4]
