Is there anything wrong in sitting in the teacher’s place?

Question:
Is there anything wrong in sitting in the place where a teacher sits?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

It is improper and against propriety for a student to sit in the designated place of his teacher.  The Fuqahā’ clearly state that it is from the rights of a teacher that the student respects the places where the teacher sits.  The Fuqahā’ further state that even if the teacher is not present, the student should not sit in his place.[1]

[1] وَقَالَ الزندويستي حَقُّ الْعَالِمِ عَلَى الْجَاهِلِ وَحَقُّ الْأُسْتَاذِ عَلَى التِّلْمِيذِ وَاحِدٌ عَلَى السَّوَاءِ وَهُوَ أَنْ لَا يَفْتَحَ الْكَلَامَ قَبْلَهُ وَلَا يَجْلِسَ مَكَانَهُ وَإِنْ غَابَ وَلَا يَرُدُّ عَلَيْهِ كَلَامَهُ وَلَا يَتَقَدَّمَ عَلَيْهِ فِي مَشْيِهِ (رد المحتار ج 6 ص 756 أيج أيم سعيد)
 
( وَالتِّلْمِيذِ لِأُسْتَاذِهِ ) قَالَ فِي تَعْلِيمِ الْمُتَعَلِّمِ إنَّ طَالِبَ الْعِلْمِ لَا يَنَالُ الْعِلْمَ وَلَا يَنْتَفِعُ بِهِ إلَّا بِتَعْظِيمِ الْعِلْمِ وَأَهْلِهِ وَتَعْظِيمِ الْأُسْتَاذِ وَتَوْقِيرِهِ قِيلَ مَا وَصَلَ مَنْ وَصَلَ إلَّا بِمُرَاعَاةِ الْحُرْمَةِ وَمَا سَقَطَ مَنْ سَقَطَ إلَّا بِتَرْكِ الْحُرْمَةِ وَتَعْظِيمُ الْعِلْمِ خَيْرٌ مِنْ الطَّاعَةِ أَلَا تَرَى أَنَّ الْإِنْسَانَ لَا يَكْفُرُ بِالْمَعْصِيَةِ وَإِنَّمَا يَكْفُرُ بِتَرْكِ الْحُرْمَةِ وَمِنْ تَعْظِيمِ الْعِلْمِ تَعْظِيمُ الْمُعَلِّمِ قَالَ عَلِيٌّ كَرَّمَ اللَّهُ وَجْهَهُ أَنَا عَبْدُ مَنْ عَلَّمَنِي حَرْفًا إنْ شَاءَ بَاعَ وَإِنْ شَاءَ اسْتَرَقَّ وَقَدْ أَنْشَدَ رَأَيْت أَحَقَّ الْحَقِّ حَقَّ الْمُعَلِّمِ وَأَوْجَبَهُ حِفْظًا عَلَى كُلِّ مُسْلِمِ لَقَدْ حَقًّ أَنْ يُهْدَى إلَيْهِ كَرَامَةً لِتَعْلِيمِ حَرْفٍ وَاحِدٍ أَلْفُ دِرْهَمِ وَمَنْ عَلَّمَك حَرْفًا مِمَّا تَحْتَاجُ إلَيْهِ فِي الدِّينِ فَهُوَ أَبُوك فِي الدِّينِ وَمِنْ تَوْقِيرِ الْمُعَلِّمِ أَنْ لَا يَمْشِيَ أَمَامَهُ وَلَا يَجْلِسَ مَكَانَهُ وَلَا يَبْدَأَ الْكَلَامَ عِنْدَهُ وَلَا يَسْأَلَ شَيْئًا عِنْدَ مَلَالَتِهِ وَيُرَاعِيَ الْوَقْتَ وَلَا يَدُقَّ الْبَابَ وَيَطْلُبَ رِضَاهُ وَيَجْتَنِبَ سَخَطَهُ وَيَمْتَثِلَ أَمْرَهُ فِي غَيْرِ مَعْصِيَةٍ وَمِنْ تَوْقِيرِهِ تَوْقِيرُ أَوْلَادِهِ وَقَرَابَتِهِ وَخُدَّامِهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ فَمَنْ يُؤْذِي أُسْتَاذَه يُحْرَمُ بَرَكَةَ الْعِلْمِ وَلَا يَنْتَفِعُ بِهِ إلَّا قَلِيلًا انْتَهَى (بريقة محمدية)
