Question:

Until when can Qurbani be delayed if I did not get it done on the day of Eid? [Question Published as Received]

The Fatwa

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

The Answer

Uḍḥīyyah (ritual sacrifice) can be performed until Maghrib on the twelfth of Dhu al-Ḥijjah.

The Fiqh of the Answer

Imam al-Qudūrī (d.428 A.H) notes that the days of performing Uḍḥīyyah (sacrifice) are the from the tenth until Maghrib of the twelfth of Dhu al-Ḥijjah. On the tenth, Uḍḥīyyah will commence from al-Ṣubḥ al-Ṣādiq if it is being performed in rural areas, and after ʿĪd Ṣalāh if it is being performed in an urban area.

Imam Abu Bakr al-Khwārizmī (d.640 AH) notes that the Uḍḥīyyah can only be performed from the Fajr of ʿĪd Ṣalāh for the people who live in rural areas, and for the city residents only after the ʿĪd Ṣalāh. He further states that ʿĪd day is the best day to perform Uḍḥīyyah and it is permissible to perform it until the twelfth of Dhu al-Ḥijjah.

Mullā Khusru (d.885 AH) states similar to the above, but further reasons that the day of the twelfth has been included by the Shāriʿ to incorporate ease for the person who may have the appropriate amount on the first day but cannot afford it by the last day. Likewise, the person who does not have the appropriate amount on the first day but gains the amount by the last day will be required to perform Uḍḥīyyah.

Uḍḥīyyah is known as a Qurbah by the Shāriʿ in these days and in this particular manner. When and how something is Qurbah can only be revealed and taught to us by the Prophet ﷺ.
