Question:

What is the ruling of looking at your prospective spouse?

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The Answer:

It is encouraged and desirable for both the boy and the girl to see one another before marriage. This was encouraged by the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasallam. The Prophet once said to the companion Mughirah ibn Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him), “Look at her, for this is more likely to create lasting affection between you” (Sunan al-Tirmidhi).
