Question:

As a higher rate tax payer, can I claim back tax relief from Zakat payments?

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The Answer:

It is permissible to claim and accept a tax relief on a Zakat payment.

The Fiqh (jurisprudence of the answer):

If you are a higher/additional rate taxpayer, you can claim tax relief on the difference between the basic rate and higher/additional rate of tax (through your tax return). This difference is being claimed back from a third party and not the recipient of the Zakat. In addition, this does not impact nor decrease your actual Zakat payment.

And Allah Ta’ālā Alone Knows Best
