Which nisab applies to you?

The Darul Iftaa follows the Hanafi school. If your zakatable wealth is cash, savings, trade goods, or a mix of these with gold or silver, use the silver nisab. It is the lower of the two, so more people pay, and the poor benefit more.

If all you own is gold, and nothing else zakatable, the gold nisab applies.

Zakat is due when your wealth is at or above the nisab on your zakat date, a full lunar year after it first reached it. You then pay 2.5% of the total. Read the Zakat FAQs

Good to know

How is the nisab worked out?

The weight of the nisab in grams multiplied by today’s price per gram: 612.36 g for silver and 87.48 g for gold. A troy ounce is 31.1035 g.

Why does the figure change every day?

The nisab is fixed in weight, not in money. Its value moves with the price of gold and silver, and with the exchange rate of your currency.

Which day’s nisab do I use?

The nisab on your zakat date. Ups and downs during the year do not matter, as long as your wealth does not drop to nothing.

Do debts count?

Debts due within the next twelve months are deducted before you compare your wealth with the nisab. The Zakat FAQs explain this in detail.
