Is the blood residue in poultry pure?

The question, as received

Sheikh I wanted to ask abt ruling on chickens blood ! Like my dad brought the chicken from the chicken slaughter shop ,after bringing home I see blood on the chicken ? I wanted to know whether that blood is najas or not !?

(Question published as received)

The answer

The blood remaining within an animal’s veins, and/or any residue found on the skin of an animal post Zabīhah(slaughter), is considered Ṭāhir (pure).

Fiqh basis

The blood which is impure and impermissible, is that which is drained during the slaughtering process – This is what is intended by Al Dam Al Masfūh (flowing blood). ‘Allāmah Kāsānī in Al Badā’i (d.587 AH), Qādhī Khān(d.592 AH) in hisFatāwā,andAs Sarakhsī (d.483 AH) inAl Mabsūt,amongst others have stated that the blood which remains in the veins and meat of the animal postslaughter, is not considered najis(impure) – as the prohibition of flowing blood does not extend to any remaining blood after draining.

The rationale

To optimise bleed out at slaughter and reduce carcass and meat defects is a major goal of the meat processing industry, as improved bleeding can improve the quality of the meat during storage (Ali et al., 2007).

The transfer of harmful germs, bacteria and toxins, amongst other harmful substances are released through the slaughter and draining of the animal’s flowing and gushing blood. The most hygienic mode of mitigation is that of natural blood draining. Any remaining residue from draining may easily be washed and the poultry would cease to carry any further harmful elements.

And Allah knows best.
